Historic Cumberland Gap gained early recognition as "The Gateway to the West". The procession began by Indians who followed buffalo trails through the pass. Reports of the pass date back to the mid 1600's.
Known as the first and best avenue for the settlement of the interior of our nation, the ''Gap'' in the Appalachian mountains was named after the ''Duke of Cumberland'', son of King George II. The Wilderness Road, a 200 mile trail connected to the Great Valley Road which came through the Shennandoah Valley from Pennsylvania, was marked by Daniel Boone and used by pioneers moving West through the Town of Cumberland Gap and the natural "Gap".
